The Technique of Overcoming Descents and Ascents

Driving in the conditions of overcoming steep climbs and descents is difficult and dangerous for any driver regardless of his driving experience. To overcome the steep climb or descent, you need not only a good physical skill, endurance and attentiveness but also technical knowledge of driving in extreme conditions.

Overcoming of abrupt turns, descents or ascents is always associated with emotional stress that is why the focus of the driver is intended to assess the speed and trajectory of movement of the vehicle, and road condition.

Steep Slopes

We will try to understand which driving technique are most often used in practice to overcome the climbs and descents.

The Technique of Climbing up Steep Slopes

A special difficulty causes the driving of the car in overcoming the steep and slippery climbs. Danger is hidden in the heart of the maneuver – the rise, which is very long, uneven and steep.

It’s important to follow the basic rule is not to turn the wheel and not to add gas on the rise.

For climbing up steep slopes, remember this tactic. When you raise the car wheel, you should move strictly along the motion path, without steep turns and slippage.

Overcoming of long ascents (short can be overcome with acceleration in any transmission) s carried out only in the lower gears, and the transmission is selected with regard to the steepness of the slope and the mass of the car to go without switching the transmission during the climb.

More experienced drivers use the following tactic of overcoming steep climbs. Speeding at a certain speed, a smooth discharge of the gas with reduced speed to the top of the climb begins before the rise. Thus, the steeper the rise, the faster the speed will decrease in the process of overcoming it.

The next step is overcoming of the top of the climb. The speed of the overcoming of the rise is minimal. At the end of the climb, keep moving at optimum speed, which allows to make the braking on a certain stretch of road at the right moment. It’s especially important when you go along a narrow road or when you get closer to the oncoming car.

The Technique of Overcoming Steep Descents

As in the case of climbing the overcoming of steep slopes is carried out very carefully and without any haste. The main rule of driving downhill is to prevent wheel slippage (skidding), otherwise, the driver just cannot cope with the management.

Overcoming of descents and ascents, carried out with the set of the wheels on the trajectory, on a permanent transfer without using the brake pedal (if the steepness of the descent allows).

Brake using the engine in low gear. To stop on a steep descent and to overcome the possible arbitrary drive, the wheels must have the reliable support (a border, stone or elevation) and the car must be with the parking brake on and in first gear.

Before starting the descent, the driver chooses the most optimal transmission without using brake system of the car to avoid slipping of the wheels.

Choosing the correct gear, you should note the road condition (bumps, holes, potholes, etc.), and also the technical capabilities of the car. It’s important to remember that overcoming the steep descent, it is strictly forbidden to turn off the clutch and the ignition. Overcoming the climbs and descends of the same slope occurs on the same transmission.
